What is an SVG file?
Let’s start right at the very basics. SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphic, which essentially means that it can be scaled to different sizes without losing its quality. SVG files can be used on digital cutting machines such as the Brother ScanNCut, Cricut and Silhouette.
They make your life a load easier as the file is simply downloaded onto your computer, then using your machine’s software you can load it onto your device and create stunning projects in an instant. It saves all the hassle of copying and tracing designs.
They aren’t just made for paper, you can use SVG templates on all sorts of materials such as cotton, felt, vinyl leather – just check your machine’s capabilities first. The great thing about them is they don’t become pixelated when resized.
How do I use the files?
Most of the time, your files will be downloaded as a ZIP file, so you will need to extract them first before doing anything else. The next step is to download it onto the relevant software you use with your machine (select the SVG file, not the ZIP). Once the project is on your grid, you will need to separate the layers (there won’t always be layers, it just depends on the design), then arrange and cut as you usually would with your files. For more information, watch this detailed video by Star Crafter Lia Griffith, it shows all you need to know for using them on a Cricut:
