A Quick Cuppa With Lia Griffith

We quiz papercrafting queen Lia Griffith on her gorgeous creations!

What is your earliest papercrafting memory?
When I was six years old, I made two dolls from tissue paper – I still have them today! Paper and cardboard are inexpensive craft materials, so I was always making things like toy cars and dolls.

How did you develop your paper passion?
My website grew out of a love for all things handcrafted, particularly paper flowers. When I discovered the Cricut Explore in 2014, my crafting capabilities changed beyond measure. Suddenly a paper bouquet that would have taken a week to cut by hand could be made in just a couple of hours! We now use a cutting machine for lots of our DIY projects.

What do you enjoy most about working with paper?
I love teaching people how to turn an inexpensive piece of flat paper into a unique work of art. The versatility of it will never cease to amaze me.

Which project are you most proud of, and why?
I still love my crepe paper topiary plant. It took some time to design and make, which I found very calming. And it stands the test of time, it’s a real classic.

What’s the secret behind a successful die-cutting project?
Demystifying the software is the first step. Once you understand how to navigate, creativity takes the lead. Second, understanding the machine and the material that you are working with really helps. I also encourage people to be patient with themselves. Don’t expect perfect results straight away and allow yourself to make some mistakes – that’s the best way to learn!

What Christmas projects are you planning?
Last year, Cricut launched the first machine to cut fabric, leather and wood as well as paper. This will allow us to make some really unique ornaments and decorations this year.

Which are your top festive trends for this year?
We’re looking at using untraditional jewel tones and matte metallics to create holiday projects that can take you right through winter. Paper village scenes and winter deer motifs are going to take the place of sleigh bells and snowmen!

What do you look forward to at Christmas?
Cooking, baking, being with family… but I always get most excited about decorating the tree! It’s something I take great pride in because all my decorations are handmade. As I always say, when it comes to creativity, more is more!

What are your top festive papercrafting tips?
Using a cutting machine definitely saves time if you’re making lots of cards and decorations. If not, I’d suggest sticking to one focal piece, such as a paper floral table decoration, or a gorgeous felt wreath for the front door. Try to go with designs that’ll last the entire season – think winter florals and jewel tones, rather than bright reds and Father Christmas!

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Remember to stay in the heart of the why. I constantly ask myself, ‘Why did I create this business?’ When things get clouded or challenging, this question keeps me grounded and focused.
