In Russia the dolls are made from wood and nested inside each other in decreasing sizes. The first one is usually a woman dressed in the classic sarafan, a long and shapeless peasant dress. The figures inside can be male or female, the smallest and innermost one being a baby worked from a single piece of wood. The dolls often follow a theme, aside from the typical peasant girls we are used to seeing, to fairytale characters or Soviet leaders.
