If you’ve never tried silk painting before, then you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to achieve professional results. You also don’t need to shell out for lots of expensive equipment to get started. Instead of buying special frames to stretch the silk, it’s possible to use small wooden picture frames with the glass removed;­ in fact they work just as well and are much cheaper. Adding rock salt to wet paint gives a wonderful mottled effect, as does blending similar colours. The key is to relax and not be afraid to experiment. Once you’ve accomplished small-scale projects, you’ll soon develop the skills and confidence to tackle larger pieces.
