What tools and equipment do I need to make a project like the candelabra?
To get started you only need a small area to work in (about 2.5 metres square) with a bench or sturdy table. We can actually supply specially designed benches for the task if you need one! Then, of course, you need the right tools and we can offer different packages to suit your budget and the scale of projects you wish to tackle. Most crafters opt for our smaller range of tools (called the Practical Range) which works with metal strip ranging from 10mm wide x 1.6mm thick to 20mm wide x 3mm thick. Using these sizes you can make everything from small decorative projects such as candlesticks, plant pot holders, clocks, and jewellery stands to mid-sized projects likes gates and fencing. The Candelabra project in the video was made with one of our Practical Workshop packages that include all the tools to cut, bend, scroll, roll, punch and rivet your metalwork together. We also offer larger tools (our Master and XL ranges) for larger scale projects like furniture and large gates.
What type of metal do I need to make this project and where do I get it from?
We recommend using either black hot rolled mild steel or bright inter-annealed (softened) mild steel strip. This can be purchased from some local steel stockists and you might even come across it in selected hardware and DIY stores. However, on our webstore www.metal-craft.co.uk we cater for all your material requirements with a large range of steel packs in handy sizes delivered to your door. We also offer an extensive range of other decorative accessories and fixings to enhance your metalwork.
How do I learn how to use the tools in the first place?
We always recommend starting by reading the set of Operating Instruction books that come with each tool to learn how to set up each one, operate it and look after it. However, if you prefer a visual aid over written instructions, we can provide our Demonstration DVD which demonstrates how all of our tools work. For the novice, we suggest having a go at some pre-designed projects like this Candelabra or even trying one of our Starter Packs. Our User Guide contains useful tips on how to come up with your own designs, plus our Design & Ideas Booklet is packed with ideas to inspire people to make their own projects.
When I have made this what other projects can I make?
The list is endless! Our What To Make page on our website shows a wide range of ideas as does our Design & Idea Book. If you visit our Facebook page you will see quite a few ideas that our customers have made as well.
