Whether you intend to live long and prosper with Star Trek, deduce everything there is to know about Sherlock or choose to catch every Pokémon, there is something for everyone to enjoy. And, thanks to the digital age, connecting with other people who love the same thing is easier than ever, and one way of expressing that devotion is through crafting. We’ve decided to share a few of our favourite nerdy makes.
1 Sherlock Cross-Stitch
Benedict Cumberbatch’s big break came from his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the modern BBC adaptation, and he’s been high in demand ever since. The waiting times in-between each series of Sherlock can be a challenge, however there’s plenty of material out there to keep fans entertained, and the new Benedict Cumberstitch book by Colleen Carrington definitely does that. It gets better: we’ve got a free cross-stitch project of the famous sleuth to download!
2 Star Wars Treats
We’re so excited for the seventh instalment of the iconic Star Wars saga (which comes out 18th December in UK cinemas) that we simply had to celebrate, and what better way than with a selection of cleverly designed macarons? Geeky and tasty… there’s nothing better!
3 Dalek Amigurumi
Doctor Who is back with a new series on BBC 1 and featured Davros and the Daleks in the opening episode last Saturday, so it’s a great time to start ‘exterminating’ balls of yarn to make a cuddly Dalek toy! Though we never thought we’d use the words ‘cuddly’ and ‘Dalek’ in the same sentence. Don’t hate us, Doctor.
4 Yoshi Doll
Learn how to crochet Yoshi from Super Mario Bros with this free tutorial. He would make a fantastic stocking filler for a fan of the games!
5 Pokémon Onesies
How adorable is this team of Pokémon? Recreate Ash and his pals from the first generation with these fun onesie costumes. And adults, do not fret – just find a larger onesie pattern and use the guide to add on all the necessary elements. Because we really can’t blame anyone for wanting that Pikachu outfit.
6 Lord Of The Rings
“You have my sword. And my bow. And my beard!”
Okay, this isn’t exactly how the Rivendell scene from Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring plays out, but we think we’re entitled to a bit of artistic freedom, especially when this dwarven hat is so good.
7 Harry Potter Quidditch
We never got our Hogwarts letter, but that hasn’t stopped us crafty muggles from loving magic. This Halloween, why not throw a Harry Potter-themed party and make your own butterbeer and Quidditch robes? October is the best time of the year to pick up brooms at bargain prices too!
8 Clangers Toy
Fans of this much-loved children’s TV show were delighted when it was relaunched on CBeebies earlier this year. For those looking to take a trip down memory lane, we have an original pattern for you to download and make.
9 Star Trek Fashion
Boldly go where no crafter has gone before and make your very own Spock Christmas jumper! This illustrated tutorial shows you how to use fabric paints to create this Trekkie masterpiece. You can find it here.
